romney won the debate. when asked who was more likeable, debate watchers gave the two candidates essentially equal marks. that's one piece of spin that doesn't quite pass the sniff test. decide for yourself if this one does from the campaign's ben lebold who suggested mitt romney last night was acting. >> it was performance art. he locked himself into some bad positions that he took during the republican primary, tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas, refusing to ask the wealthiest for a dime to reduce the deficit and those give us big openings to talk about on the campaign trail in key states in the weeks ahead. >> vice president biden, meantime, said his boss did a good job during a bright line between his policies and mitt romney's. >> i think the president did a wonderful job in making it clear just how stark that choice is. >> keeping them honest, that is precisely where the pundits, even those who support president obama, say he dropped the ball and when we asked our viewers whether mr. oba

lot more people have to get to know govern orromnor romney so more important debate. i think he has to be presidential. i think he has to convey the kind of person that people would be comfortable with as president. i tend to think we kind of score this as if it's a boxing match or basketball game. >> you know what it's like to debate mitt romney. i don't want to rehash any old wounds but i do want to play just some of the thing you guys got into and ask what he's like as a debater. >> governor romney, was new york a sanctuary city? >> absolutely. called itself a sanctuary city. in fact, in the welfare reform act president clinton brought forward said they were going to end the sanctuary policy of new york city, the mayor actually brought a suit to maintain its sanctuary city status. >> it's unfortunate, but mitt generally criticizes people in a situation in which he's had far the worst record. for example, in his case, there were six sanctuary cities. he did nothing about them. there was even a sanctuary mansion at his own home, illegal immigrants were being employed

with two days to go until the first presidential debate, president obama and mitt romney will have the chance to press one another to answer questions that they themselves have been reluctant to answer. we'll run through some big ones, keeping them honest tonight. first, we've got some late polling. new cnn/orc numbers that show the race tightening. president obama still leads among likely voters 50% to 47% but that three-point gap is within the poll's margin of error. by comparison, just after the conventions, mr. obama got a four-point bounce to put him in the lead by six. the president's favorable rating meantime remains above the crucial 50% mark at 52%. mr. romney is close but still in negative territory at 49%. he enjoys an edge on handling the deficit and joblessness, but trails on virtually every other big issue, including medicare, taxes and foreign policy. keeping them honest, when it comes to some of those issues, both candidates have come up short either on specifics or credibility. issues like cutting taxes without ballooning the deficit or burdening the middle class. the

you heard that mitt romney wants to get rid of federal funding for pbs. it came up in the debate. there's been a lot of talk about a certain big bird since then. >> i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs. i like pbs. i like big bird. i actually like you too but i'm not going to keep on borrowing money from china to pay for it. >> don't worry. somebody's finally getting tough on big bird. elmo, you better make a run for it. governor romney is going to let wall street run wild again but he's going to bring the hammer down on sesame street. >> first of all, full disclosure, i know big bird. i'm sorry to be a name dropper but it's true. not like i go to dinner with him. i don't want to overstate it. i haven't been over to his nest for drinks or anything. but i have gone to his workplace. >> this is anderson cooper in for oscar, the grouch who's on assignment at the dump. i'm here with two legendary grouch newscasters, dan rather not and walter cranky to discuss today's letter in the news. the letter g. say hello, dan rather not. >> i would rather not. >> i wonder what dan rather not is

he was asked how he would have answered if the tape had come up in wednesday's debate. here's part of his answer. >> clearly in a campaign with hundreds, if not thousands of speeches and question and answer sessions, now and then you're going to say something that doesn't come out right. in this case i said something that's just completely wrong. >> he said "completely wrong." that's completely weird namely because the night the tape aired, mr. romney rushed to a microphone to defend his 47% remarks. he kept defending them and hounded supporters for days after that. >> it's not elegantly stated, let me put it that way. i'm speaking off the cuff in response to a question, and i'm sure i could state it more clearly in a more effective way. >> the point of all this is the size of government is too big, and if we don't do something about it, we're going to lose vet idea of america. >> those who are dependent on government and those who think government's job is to redistribute, i'm not going to get them. >> there are makers and takers. there are producers and there are p ar
